The Gifts of Bacchus
A scenic journey through receptions of Bacchus in the Baroque period
The early music ensemble Due sopra il Basso brings to the stage an extraordinarily lively program. In the Arcadian realms, the shepherds call on the little birds to ease their love suffering. Flirtation, love, rejection and repeated sorrow characterize life in paradise as well as on earth. But then Bacchus, the god of ecstasy and wine, appears and challenges the cruel little Cupid. Which of the two will prove to be the most powerful?
The program includes English, French, Italian and German music from the early and high baroque period by composers like Henry Purcell (1659-1695), Louis-Nicolas Clérambault (1676-1749), Agostino Steffani (1654-1728) and Georg Philipp Telemann (1681- 1767).
